Traveling to India made me aware of the many challenges the country faces in relation to Education, food insecurity, elderly care, and women empowerment.
I wasn't aware of the issues affecting India before traveling there. I knew they had a pollution problem, however, that was about the extent of my knowledge regarding issues in India. I learned a lot about the political climate in India and how that has been affecting people living in the country.
The top 1% of India holds 73% of the nations wealth. Many people in India live in poverty and survive on 2 dollars a day.
With a growing force of economical corruption within the government, more and more people are turning towards non-government organizations for help. The government will not provide aid for the India people, so organizations such as FORWARD, Teach for India, and Help Age India exist to help people in need.
A Force for Good
By visiting the organizations that we did, we learned a lot about the social and political history in India. I was not aware that many elderly people in India suffer abuse and abandonment from their family members. Organizations like Help Age India help create a community for the elderly where they can rely on each other and feel self sufficient. (#HelpAgeIndia)
There are many organizations fighting to end the social and economic injustices in Indian society, and the future looks bright despite the difficulties in the present.
