Leadership

As a member of the JET program, you are expected to act as a leader and a role model both in, and outside of the classroom. Many of the locations that JETs are placed in are small towns and communities. Therefore, your actions outside of the classroom are a reflection of you, your school, and your country.

In class, JETs lead by example by using English at all times and demonstrating proper behavior. They are also expected to lead class alone and create their own lesson plans on certain occasions.

Cultural Exchange

One of the key aspects of the JET program is the opportunity for cultural exchange. Not only from the Japanese community but from fellow JETs. As mentioned before participants come from 57 different countries, and this commonly leads to global friendships and chances to experience each others cultures.

It goes without saying that living in Japan you will undoubtedly engage in cultural activities and festivals. However, the key to a fulfilling experience in JET is dependent on the participant's willingness to participate in and explore their community.

The benefit of working for JET is the large global community that you become a part of. JET participants come from 57 different countries. This allows members to find a variety of people who can share their experiences with them and help them feel at home.

Many JET participants find themselves in small towns and rural areas that are drastically different from their home town/country. This along with the language barrier and acclimation to the culture creates a lot of stress for participants. Luckily, fellow JETs are almost always nearby.

Teamwork

When working as an ALT or a CIR, teamwork is key. Being able to work with and communicate efficiently with coworkers is fundamental for success as a JET participant. This requires JETs to have cultural sensitivity and to be patient when communicating with coworkers. There are many things that can be easily lost in translation, so it is important to clarify when things seem off.

As a ALT, the participant will be working closely with their JTE, so their energy and styles must compliment one another.
